What is VPK?
Florida’s Voluntary Prekindergarten Program is an innovative program that gives children a head start in their education, before they enter traditional kindergarten or elementary school.
This program is designed to prepare children for kindergarten. Enrollment is voluntary and parents have the option to choose between public or private schools.
VPK does not charge an enrollment fee and is not designed exclusively for low-income families. Its goal is to level up children’s cognitive and social abilities, regardless of their socio-economic status, so that they are prepared to excel at school.
A top-quality VPK can help children improve their language skills, perform better on school readiness exams, have improved social skills, and experience fewer behavioral issues once they enter elementary school.
What children learn at VPK
The program focuses on early literacy skills and math for students aged 4 and 5.
VPK is not just about learning the basics. There’s a lot more. It is also a time where children interact with one another and develop social skills, while bonding and growing their emotional intelligence.
Parents are advised to inquire about the planned curriculum and activities of the institution before choosing a provider for VPK.
What Children Gain From VPK
According to the Florida Department of Education VPK participants generally show greater kindergarten readiness than those who don’t participate in the program. This means that the children are better prepared to succeed in their academic and school life.
Florida conducts an annual assessment to determine the effectiveness of interactions between teachers and children in the classroom. This tool, known as Classroom Scoring System, classifies the effectiveness of teacher-student interactions in the classroom. It considers three areas: Classroom Organization and Instructional Support.
It is expected that the children will have a more positive experience in school, and their cognitive and social development will be enhanced.
